Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Access Holdings PLC and Coronation Group, has been awarded the prestigious African Banker Lifetime Achievement Award. This accolade was presented during the African Banker Awards ceremony held in Nairobi, Kenya, coinciding with the 2024 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank.
Aig-Imoukhuede’s career, spanning over three decades, has been marked by transformative leadership in the African banking sector. As the former Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, he led the bank from a minor player to one of Nigeria’s top five banks, expanding its footprint to nine other African countries and the United Kingdom. His vision extended beyond banking to founding Coronation Group, which focuses on democratizing wealth creation across Africa.
His contributions are not limited to banking. Through the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, he and his wife have committed $100 million to initiatives aimed at transforming public sector effectiveness, building the next generation of Nigerian leaders, and improving primary healthcare access in Nigeria. Notably, his Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme (ADHFP) aims to establish 774 world-class primary healthcare facilities in Nigeria.
Aig-Imoukhuede’s advocacy for sustainable banking is also noteworthy. He led the adoption of the Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principles in 2012, a model now followed by several countries globally. His work underscores the importance of sustainable practices in fostering economic development while protecting the environment.
Reflecting on his recognition, Aig-Imoukhuede attributed the award to the collective efforts of his colleagues, emphasizing the motivation it brings to continue striving for excellence and contributing to Africa’s growth and development.
